Design for Recyclability: Can the intimates sector reach circularity?

Circularity is the buzz word of the fashion industry, but achieving it can seem like a quest for the holy grail. This panel will explore how realistic circularity is for the intimates sector, and look at the challenges and opportunities for both extending the life of garments and increasing end of life recovery for recycling, through the lens of decision making in design.

UNDRESSED: LAUNDRY CARE WORKSHOP

We organised the Undressed: Laundry care Workshop, in collaboration with Miele, to educate consumers about the environmental impacts caused by clothes’ washing, drying and ironing, at Miele’s Exclusive Private Lounge. The workshop focused on the positive steps that consumers can take to lighten the environmental load caused by their washing their clothes.

FOREVER REDRESSED AT HARVEY NICHOLS

We presented our the Forever REDRESSED Exhibition at Hong Kong’s Harvey Nichols containing six prominent Hong Kong fashion designers’ reconstructed secondhand garments. Many of our contributing designers sourced their raw materials from Hong Kong’s used clothes recycling bins in an effort to drive consumer awareness about waste reduction and about more sustainable clothing disposal.

THE 3% MOUNTAIN

The 3% Mountain was a six meter high installation of creatively displayed secondhand clothes that represented just 3% of the average textile waste going into Hong Kong’s landfills on a daily basis. We exhibited this impressive mountain in June, 2011 at Hong Kong’s iconic Star Ferry.

CHINA'S RISE IN SUSTAINABLE FASHION EXHIBITION

Our exhibition on China’s rise in sustainable fashion took place at the Ethical Fashion Show at Cité de la Mode et du Design in Paris. The exhibition presented the major drivers for sustainable fashion in China and revealed the Chinese sustainable fashion designers who are making ripples in the world’s largest garment manufacturing nation.

ECOCHIC GENEVA FASHION SHOW

We organised the highly-acclaimed EcoChic Geneva, in partnership with The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The fashion show featured 52 prominent fashion designers from 40 countries who united on the catwalk at the Palais des Nations, home of the United Nations Office in Geneva. The designers’ inspiring garments demonstrated various biodiversity-conserving materials to an influential audience.

We co-organised with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) a one-day seminar entitled Redefining Sustainability in the International Agenda at the Palais des Nations, home of the United Nations Office in Geneva. Our timely seminar the United Nation’s International Year of Biodiversity provided a collaborative platform for the fashion and luxury industries to discuss their role in promoting and supporting biodiversity conservation through their internal operations and global supply chains.

We presented our EcoChic Shanghai fashion show featuring 40 designers, including a groundbreaking 13 Chinese designers, at ‘1933′, a revitalised Art Deco building in downtown Shanghai. Our fashion show demonstrated a wide range of sustainable fashion techniques, many of which were new concepts to our Chinese audience
