The digital space is disrupting the way the fashion supply chain – which contributes to the second biggest polluting industry in the world – communicates. Some players are now using digital technology to their advantage as they build more sustainable businesses whilst reducing waste, as they seek to cut out traditional road blocks that lead to clunky and often complex supply chains, and waste in the production process.

REBIRTH GARDEN 2016 EXHIBITION IN SHANGHAI

We showcased competition designs from The EcoChic Design Award 2014/15 cycle alumni Cher Chan, Noella Tapasu Koy and Yvonne Tsai at the Rebirth Garden 2016 exhibition in Shanghai organised by Business Ecology Studio in April and May. The exhibition started at Shanghai Financial Tower and then moved to Shanghai Library and presented designs representing “aspects of the circular economy and visions for a better and more sustainable future.”

The EcoChic Design Award Alumni’s minimal waste designs were exhibited at the world’s largest fabrics and accessories trade fair, Intertextile Shanghai Apparel Fabrics within the fair’s All About Sustainability Zone. We also brought expert heads together with Redress’ Founder Christina Dean leading a panel discussion on E-Commerce: An Exciting Opportunity for Sustainable Fashion? This explored the opportunity of merging two of fashion’s big growth areas – the rise in e-commerce and the rise in interest in sustainable fashion – into one winning formula for fashion.

ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION ON 'THE FUTURE OF SUSTAINABLE FASHION EDUCATION'

Redress and the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) co-organised a two-hour roundtable discussion entitled ‘The Future of Sustainable Fashion Education’ which took place at HKDI.  The roundtable objectives were to review the current practices of sustainable fashion education, to explore the problems experienced in integrating sustainability education into the higher education fashion curriculum and to offer recommendations to educators. The Redress Forum was a one and a half day seminar and workshop, supported by HKTDC Fashion Week, bringing together over 100 fashion industry professionals in Hong Kong to address the future of the fashion industry. The event explored the challenges and opportunities faced by Asian and European designers, manufacturers and retailers as they strive to embrace more environmentally sustainable practices to discover the new drivers that will predict the road ahead.

We were frontline at the first ‘All About Sustainability’ educational zone at China’s Intertextile Shanghai Apparel Fabrics trade fair. We presented innovative fashion examples of up-cycling, reconstruction and textile recycling within this inaugural sustainability zone that nourished China’s growing shift to a more sustainable fashion and textile industry.

RECYCLED COLLECTION BY ESPRIT 2013

We collaborated with Esprit, our The EcoChic Design Award 2012 retail partner, on the ‘Recycled Collection by Esprit’. These recycled textiles collections were designed by The EcoChic Design Award Hong Kong Winner 2012, Wister Tsang, and China 2012, Gong Jia Qi. Combined, their collections retailed in Hong Kong, Mainland China, Taiwan, Singapore, Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand between May to October 2013.

CUTTING WASTE OUT OF FASHION

We presented a collaborative exhibition at Hong Kong’s Interstoff Asia Essential on multi-stakeholders’ approaches to cutting waste out of fashion. Our exhibition shared expertise from NGOs China Water RiskGreenpeace and carbon management company, RESET Carbon on how textile, water, chemical and energy wastage can be reduced along the fashion supply chain. We showcased waste reducing garments, designed by EspritLevisM&SPatagoniaTimberland and Reclaim to Wear, to bring this topic to life.

BEHIND THE SEAMS AT LEVI STRAUSS & CO.

We held a workshop for select Levi Strauss & Co’s Hong Kong staff to brainstorm sustainable fashion design. In this interactive workshop, we provided a lively overview of sustainable fashion design and introduced an unusual challenge, where Levi Strauss & Co’s staff picked their way through bags discarded used clothes to challenge their staff on ‘Why do people throw away so many clothes?

Research: Profitable Textile Waste

We collaborated with the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) Department of Fashion & Image Design on a research project. We researched how to profitably reuse pre-consumer textile waste in Hong Kong’s fashion supply chain in ways that minimise negative environmental impacts. We organised the ‘Get Redressed’ RBS workshop to provide lively educational content for RBS’ ‘Focused Women HK’ in order to engage women with the broader environmental issues contained in their wardrobes. We dialogued with the ‘Ladies of Luxury’ to address sustainability in the luxury sector, hosted by the KEE Club. The ‘Ladies of Luxury’ is a voluntary and collaborative network formed of senior representatives from a wide range of luxury brands, including Hermès, Gucci, Chanel, Ferragamo and Louis Vuitton that aims to support various community engagement activities.

FOREVER REDRESSED AT HARVEY NICHOLS

We presented our the Forever REDRESSED Exhibition at Hong Kong’s Harvey Nichols containing six prominent Hong Kong fashion designers’ reconstructed secondhand garments. Many of our contributing designers sourced their raw materials from Hong Kong’s used clothes recycling bins in an effort to drive consumer awareness about waste reduction and about more sustainable clothing disposal.

Our exhibition on China’s rise in sustainable fashion took place at the Ethical Fashion Show at Cité de la Mode et du Design in Paris. The exhibition presented the major drivers for sustainable fashion in China and revealed the Chinese sustainable fashion designers who are making ripples in the world’s largest garment manufacturing nation.
